CPSC 699 - Graduate Degrees: Goals, Writing, Research, Evaluation Saul Greenberg > courses > CPSC 699 > ... Graduate Degrees: Goals, Writing, Research, Evaluation Notes on the first lecture of CPSC 699 (Sept. 15) were prepared by Gladimir Baranoski Readings Gaines: Concept map. Bundy: Researcher's Bible. Crutcher: How to succeed. Graduate Students Handbook (page 8-9). Graduate Studies Handbook. M.Sc. Key Points The student has to: Know the relevant literature, meaning that he has to have good knowledge of hisarea of interest. Use methods appropriate to his field. The methods should be consistent with the view of his own peers. Besides, methods from different fields should be avoid unless the student can clearly justify their use. Perform a critical analysis. He has to look at his work and evaluate its strengths and weaknesses. Present some originality. He has at least to add value to a previous work, e.g. improve an existing algorithm. Perform a literature survey adding significant things/value to it. Ph.D. Key Points The student has to: Perform the same as with the M.Sc., but with higher standards. Perform a penetrating analysis of a problem, which will enable him to become an world expert on it. Produce an original work, worth of publication. Strive to be precise and correct. Goals: The department wants to form: A senior technical professional with a good knowledge of his field, in the case of M.Sc. students. A researcher that can work as part of a research team, in the caseof Ph.D. students. The examiners are looking for: Competence of the student compared with his peers. A thesis that should compare well with others. A good all-around computer scientist, meaning that the student has to present a general knowledge of his field. A work with no flaws or holes, which makes them feel "comfortable with the decision to pass the student". A work presented in such way that can be easily understood by people not familiar with the field. That is usually applicable to external examiners. The supervisor wants to verify if the student is able to: Define or elaborate a problem. Solve the problem: propose methodology, analyze it, solve it. Demonstrate his ideas and solutions. For example, the student may find suitable to do an implementation in areas such as graphics or scientific computing and a proof in theoretical areas. Communicate, i.e. write and present clearly his work. Conclude his work in a reasonable time, two years for M.Sc. students and four years for Ph.D. students. Thesis Start now and try to avoid throw way work. A good starting point is the literature survey. Choosing a topic: The student must be enthusiastic about it. It should be "worthy", interesting. It should be doable within the time constraints of the program. Must be someone willing to supervise it. Steps of the Thesis Writing Process Abstract. It should summarize the thesis not only introduce it. Introduction to the problem. Statement of the problem and its importance. Literature survey. Description of the methods and solutions. Detailed enough to allow other researchers to reproduce them. Discussion and evaluation of the results. Conclusion. It should summarize the work and state its main contributions. It may also include alternatives for future work based on the deficiencies and suggestions on how to address them. Overview of Common Pitfalls Don't try to solve the world! Avoid too ambitious goals. Don't wait too much for the right idea! To get ideas the student may: Talk to the supervisor. Look at the literature. Look where other people have failed. Talk to other people in the area. Write his ideas or give a talk. Both processes help to find flaws and to get new insights. Don't waste time! Avoid spending too much time on activities that are not going too add much to the thesis, specially computer games. Don't be isolated. Try to read other relevant literature and be informed about what is new in the area. it bad to take a long time to get a degree for several reasons:

Gordon Brown told African finance ministers that, at the present rate, free primary education for all would not be provided until the year 2130. Mr Brown was speaking in South Africa - the last leg of his African tour. He has promised that the UK will help pay the debts of the world's poorest countries to reduce poverty. Free primary education is one of the United Nations Millennium Development goals, which are supposed to be met by 2015. The BBC's Africa correspondent Barnaby Phillips says that many African governments are encouraged by the UK's apparent determination to help. I wish more people would have a Marshall plan for Africa Nelson Mandela But he says there is also scepticism about the need for yet another organisation trying to fight poverty and, crucially, African governments know that the UK may struggle to convince other wealthy countries to open up markets and cancel debt payments. However, Mr Brown firmly believes that while the UK chairs the G8 group of the world's richest nations, other countries can be persuaded to follow the its lead. He has said that former South African President Nelson Mandela will attend a G8 summit in London next month to personally urge the world's richest nations to do more to help Africa. 'Good scheme' Mr Brown is also expected to announce plans to boost trade with poor countries at the meeting, organised by the Commission for Africa - the commission set up by the UK to tackle the economic problems facing the continent. On his tour, he has signed deals with Mozambique and Tanzania to take on 10% of their debt to international lenders, and promised to do so with 70 more among the world's poorest nations. Speaking to the BBC, Mr Mandela applauded the UK chancellor's pledges and ideas for Africa which have been dubbed a "new Marshall plan". "My first impression is that it is a good scheme and I wish more people would have a Marshall plan for Africa," he said. Mr Brown told BBC News 24 that Mr Mandela is a hugely influential figure. He said: "I believe there is growing support in the international community for the plans being put forward. Mr Mandela "carries a huge authority around the world and I know when he talks to leaders in America, Europe or elsewhere he persuades them it's necessary to take action," Mr Brown went on. "I think he wants to bring to their attention that the Marshall Plan is one way forward to be able to deal with the problems that he for his whole life has felt passionately about, that we take action to reduce infant and maternal mortality, tackle HIV/Aids and reduce poverty in many parts of Africa." Weightloss Goal
Kostoff nearing weight-loss goal Posted on Tue, Jan. 25, 2005 Kostoff nearing weight-loss goal Gina Kostoff in February. Photos by Steve Linsenmayer of The News-Sentinel Gina Kostoff, left, at the city Board of Public Works, has lost nearly 200 pounds since her gastric bypass surgery about a year ago at St. Vincent Hospital in Carmel. Editor’s note: Staff writer Jennifer Boen first wrote about Gina Kostoff in February, just days after Kostoff underwent gastric bypass surgery with a goal of losing 200-250 pounds. Nearly a year later, Boen lets you know how Kostoff is doing. Fort Wayne resident Gina Kostoff, who underwent gastric bypass at St. Vincent Hospital in Carmel, says she’s “knocking on the door at 200 pounds in weight loss.” Though she’s doing great, she warns others the decision to have the surgery is not one to take lightly. Not everyone has what it takes to meet the strict dietary, educational and physical demands required of patients before and after the surgery. “Being compliant is absolutely the most important thing you can do,” said Kostoff, who attends a monthly support group for gastric bypass patients. “My one-year anniversary is Feb. 11. I’m very compliant. Am I 100 percent perfect? No, but I’m pretty darn close.” She hopes to lose another 80 pounds, and is now off multiple medications for high blood pressure and arthritis she needed before the weight loss. “The surgery is just a tool,” said Kostoff, utility services manager for the city’s Board of Public Works. “If you don’t do what the nutritionists say and exercise regularly, you can gain get sick, even gain back weight.” — By Jennifer Boen © 2005 News Sentinel and wire service sources.
